Wardrobe workhorses and show ponies
I've been talking about this wardrobe theory for more than a decade because it works!
Hello! It’s so easy to feel like you don’t have anything to wear but I feel this can especially feel that way when the seasons change - and yes, there’s even a whiff of autumn in the air in Brisbane. She’s faint but she’s there.
I love these trans-seasonal months - it’s a chance to really reflect upon what’s in your wardrobe and bring a fresh perspective to what’s in your wardrobe by playing with new outfit combinations. And if you’re looking at your wardrobe and thinking you don’t have what you need to create new combinations, this is your time to take stock.
Edit and reorganise your wardrobe - this is the only way to really understand what’s in there and what still works for your style personality and your lifestyle.
Make a list of any gaps you uncover - HINT: these are most probably your wardrobe workhorses, the basics that do the heavy lifting in your outfits.
Think about what show pony pieces you might like to add to your wardrobe this season as a way to freshen up your outfits and keep them feeling modern.
This workhorse and show pony way of looking at the clothes and accessories you have in your wardrobe is an idea that I’ve been talking about for more than a decade - first on my blog and then in my book, Unlock Your Style. I keep talking about it because it works and is a theory you should come back to as soon as your wardrobe starts to feel overwhelming and you feel like you have nothing to wear.
Ask yourself: what are my wardrobe workhorses? (these will differ from person to person and that’s very ok - it would be a boring old world if we all dressed the same!)
And then, consider/make a list: what show ponies would like I like to add this season - they can be trend pieces or just things that help showcase your wardrobe personality in outfits.
Let me know that you think!

What’s on my feet this autumn
I’m in love with so many of the new styles available at FRANKIE4 - and these four will be on high rotation in my autumn wardrobe. You can watch my video HERE.
In order of appearance (and style tips for you):
Shadow boot in rye - wear a cowboy boot back with an otherwise classic look for a modern twist on how to wear a cowboy boot.
Kai heel in tan - elevate any smart casual look with an updated heel style.
Cleo heels in burgundy patent - think cool girl French vibes contrast this otherwise dress heel back with smart casual pieces.
Axel sneakers in camel/leopard - contrast feminine styling in a midi skirt with casual sneakers and sweatshirt for a modern pairing.
